Shake the mug until all media is dissolved, solution should be clear yellow. Incubate for 24 hours or 48 hours, depending on temperature. After incubation time, observe the colour of the sample: a. clear yellow = negative for coliforms; b. blue-green = positive for coliforms E.coli confirmation: shine a blacklight from the bottom of the sample: no fluorescence = negative for E.coli; blue fluorescence = positive for E.coli* Dispose of water sample safely *a blacklight with a wavelength of 365 is recommended , ie. the NVF-4 blacklight PLUS  Lead Test The UK maximum contaminant level for Lead in tap water set by DWI/DEFRA is 10µg/l (= 0.01mg/l = 0.01ppm). Sensitivity: presence/absence measured at a level of 5ppb (= 0.005 mg/l) How to use the lead test: Open Lead packet and take out all contents. The foil packet contains a one test strip, test vial, a dropper pipette, and a desiccant (to be discarded). Using dropper, place water sample into test vial. Swirl vial gently for one minute. Place on a flat surface. Place test strip into the test vial, with arrows pointing DOWN. Wait 10 minutes. Do not disturb strips or vial during this time. Lines will appear on the strip. Take the strip out of the vial and read result. Negative: Bottom line (next to number 1) is darker than the top line (next to number 2). Positive: Top line (next to number 2) is darker than the bottom line (next to number 1), or lines are equally dark.   A Sensitivity & Test time: Test Sensitivity Result Time Iron 0.0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.3, 1.0 ppm (mg/l) 25 seconds Copper 0.0, 0.1, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 ppm (mg/l) 50 seconds Nitrate 0, 2, 10, 20, 50 ppm (mg/l) 1 minute Nitrite 0, 0.2, 1, 1.5, 3 ppm (mg/l) 1 minute pH 2, 4, 5, 6.5, 8.5, 9.5, 10.5, 12 30 seconds Total Alkalinity 0, 40, 80, 120, 180, 240, 500 ppm (mg/l) 30 seconds Total Chlorine 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.5, 0.8, 1, 4, 10 ppm (mg/l) 40 seconds Total Hardness 0, 50, 120, 250, 425, 1000 ppm (mg/l) 30 seconds Free Chlorine 0, 0.05, 0.2, 0.6, 1.5, 4, 10 ppm (mg/l) 45 seconds Sulfate 0, 250, >500 ppm (mg/l) 35 seconds Hydrogen Sulfide 0.3, 0.5, 1, 2 ppm (mg/l) 30 seconds Bacteria* present/absent 24-48 hours Lead presence/absence measured at a level of 5ppb (= 0.005 mg/l) 10 minutes *The bacteria test kit detects total coliform (which is  faecal bacteria for the most part) and is a presence/absence test of 1cfu/ml. Should the result be positive, then the presence of E.coli can be detected using a blacklight with a wavelength of 365 (like the NVF-4 blacklight).
