Ammonia Leak Detection Cloth in Air (1 unit)

Quick Info Category:
Description This leak detection cloth is used for the detection of Ammonia leaks in air, like sealed incubators, such as those used for infectious disease studies and in the treatment of premature birth. It can also be used for the detection of ammonia gas in sealed containers and filtration systems. It works best when exposed to vapours. The Ammonia Leak Detection Cloth is reversible and hence reusable. As long as the cloth reverts back to the original goldenrod yellow colour, it will continue to change when exposed to ammonia vapours. There is currently no certainty to how many times it can be reused. When is does not revert back to its original yellow colour then it can no longer be reused. Suitable for: air only Sensitivity: Turns green/blue in the presence of ammonia gas in air. The cloth is sensitive to vapours from a 1% solution of ammonia. Contains: 1 cloth which can be reused, size 51cm x 51cm How to Use: Place the Ammonia leak detection cloth near a suspected leak. The cloth will turn green/blue immediately upon detection. When the cloth gets wet, it is not be reusable anymore. Shelf life 2 years.   The Ammonia Leak Detection Cloth is treated with a dilute ethanol solution of bromothymol blue and phenolphthalein (10:1 ratio) and air dried. When dry, the cloth is a yellow-orange colour. When exposed to ammonia vapors, the indicator dyes turn the cloth blue/green due to the alkaline nature of the ammonia. In air, the cloth reverses back to the yellow-orange colour as it absorbs CO2 from the air. The carbonic acid lowers the pH and thus the indicator dyes revert back to their acidic colour. This reversal can be accelerated if the cloth is placed in an acidic environment (say a vinegar/acetic acid atmosphere.) The dyes are not bound to the cloth with any special binders, therefore they will wash out. They may also discolour materials they come in contact with. Interferences: The ammonia leak detection cloth measurs pH, any interferences present that create an acidic or alkaline environment competing with the effect of any ammonia gas would interact with the cloth. General description: For semi-quantitative determinations. Detection method: colorimetric. Fast, simply dip and read indicator paper. Consists of a plastic strip with attached sealed test paper. Compare colour change of test paper with fields of equal size on colour chart provided on plastic box.   Please note:  Store in a cool, dry place (between 20- 30°C) and away from excess heat and direct sunlight. Keep away from children and pets. Avoid contact of test areas on strips with skin & eyes, do not ingest or expose to acids.
